History of the Thomasmühle

The roots of the Thomasmühle date back to 1465 – originally a classic mill, and still in the family’s ownership today. For centuries, milling took place here, alongside innovation and modernization. Where mill wheels once turned, lovingly designed vacation apartments now welcome guests to relax and unwind.

The old walls tell stories: of a five-story mill (1910), of flour for bread, muesli, and regional natural foods, and of the inn “Zum schwarzen Walfisch,” which became a meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Today, alongside the apartments, the Thomasmühle is home to the VITALIS health center offering massages and physiotherapy – a place of relaxation that breathes history.

Surrounded by nature, the Ballheim family now runs fish farming in over 20 ponds and a pesticide-free orchard with around 800 trees. Directly outside the door, bike and hiking trails wind through “Romantic Franconia,” and fishing enthusiasts can find everything they need at the famous Ballheim Fishing Market or right by the lake.

With heart, foresight, and an understanding of guests’ wishes, the Thomasmühle is constantly evolving – always with the aim of creating a place that connects tranquility, nature, and regional specialties.
